Can my boss legally fire me for working at another restaurant?

I live in NC and I am currently a waitress at a local steakhouse. My mother-in-law is about to open a restaurant and I am going to be the manager, my current job says I cannot work at 2 restaurants while with them. I just want to know if this is legal and if they can really fire me. The restaurants will not even be in the same county.
